Portuguese pair would give Arsene Wenger’s FA Cup-winning squad a boost ahead of the new season
Arsenal are reportedly preparing to launch a £70million swoop for Sporting CP duo Gelson Martins and William Carvalho.
According to Portuguese daily A Bola , Arsene Wenger is ready to splash the cash on winger Martins, 22, and defensive midfielder Carvalho, 25, as the Londoners face up to at least a season without Champions League football.
The Portuguese double act would follow defender Sead Kolasinac to the Emirates following the Bosnian’s free transfer from Schalke.
And Arsenal fans may have to pinch themselves if Wenger lands his targets, with Alexandre Lacazette set to complete a £44m switch from Lyon this week.
Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas told Le Progres : “The transfer of Lacazette to Arsenal could be done in one or two days.
“We will probably reach a new record, it’s not a small transfer, €50m for a player trained by our club.
“The first offer made by Arsenal was €45m. The deal will happen for something between €45m and €50m.”
Lacazette, 26, scored 28 times in Ligue 1 last season — only Paris Saint-Germain hitman Edinson Cavani managed more with 35.
Martins netted seven goals in 43 appearances in all competitions last season, while Carvalho weighed in with two from his deep-lying position.
