Chelsea are ready to hand Alvaro Morata a contract worth £150,000 a week but Real Madrid are still holding out for a transfer fee in the region of £80m, according to reports.
The Evening Standard is reporting that the Premier League champions have turned to the Spain international as a potential alternative to Manchester United-bound Romelu Lukaku.
The same article states that Real Madrid headed off to Los Angeles for pre-season training on Monday but there were doubts whether the 24-year-old striker would be part of the travelling party.
Former Juventus striker Morata was thought to be Manchester United’s top target this summer but the Red Devils signed Lukaku in a surprise £75m deal from rivals Everton at the weekend.
Chelsea were caught on the hop after having been linked with a move to re-sign the Belgium international throughout most of the summer transfer window so far.
In a twist of fate, Morata now seems likely to move to Chelsea and finally link up with Antonio Conte, who has been a long-term admirer of the Spanish forward.
