Cristiano Ronaldo and Rio Ferdinand shared a dressing room for six years at Manchester United, playing at opposite ends of a team that won three league titles and a Champion’s League.
As such, they’re close enough to take the piss out of each other.
So it was when the two men were reunited at CR7’s Madrid home for a filmed chat set up to help the Real man flog his new Nike Mercurial boots.
“I will never forget the Red Devils. I learnt to be better and better, being around the best players in the world,” Ronaldo told Rio during the interview. So far, so bland.
Then the topic of post-football careers came up, and Ronaldo leapt at the chance to take the piss out of Ferdinand’s much publicised move in professional boxing.
“10 years? In 10 years it will be tough… Maybe I will be a boxer like you,” he said, before laughing like a mad man and – for perhaps the first time ever – speaking for the rest of us.
