He’s Dutch so obviously he’s now a target
Southampton midfielder Jordie Clasie has reportedly become a transfer target for Crystal Palace.
According to ESPN, the Dutch midfielder is on the wanted list of Dutch Eagles boss Frank de Boer, who essentially has 48 hours to save his job in South London by making some much needed signings.
Clasie has found regular minutes at St Mary’s tough to come by since arriving from Feyenord in 2015 and hasn’t played a single minute of the new season yet for the Saints, and would be a decent squad signing for any Premier League teams below mid-table.
But do Palace really need him? While Clasie is a competitive and tidy midfielder it is a position that De Boer is already well stocked in.
If he does lose Yohan Cabaye, with the Frenchman having been linked with a return to France for pretty much the whole summer, then a move for Clasie might make sense, especially given he is five years younger than Cabaye and would be a significant reduction in wages.
But there are far more pressing issues for De Boer when it comes to goalkeeper, centre-back, right wing-back and striker. Frank can do without another midfielder, bearing in mind he currently has six fit and competent options there right now.
But if he doesn’t get a new keeper he is left with Wayne Hennessey and an ageing Julian Speroni while no new striker would leave Christian Benteke as the only fit recognised first-team striker at the club.
New centre-backs are also needed with Mamadou Sakho’s move from Liverpool reportedly inching closer. Whatever happens, it’s sure to be an interesting 48 hours until the transfer window closes at SE25.
