Former champions Enyimba moved to fourth position in the Nigeria Professional Football League after they were held to a goalless draw by oriental rivals Heartland in a rescheduled match day 22 encounter at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri on Wednesday.
In a match which was not devoid of chances, both clubs wasted a number of opportunities with Fortune Omoniwari and Uche Oguchi missing begging chances for Heartland.
Gueira Jean Marie and Joseph Osadiaye were the culprits for Enyimba as they both fluffed chances to give the People’s Elephant the lead. They both came close to breaking the deadlock for Enyimba several times, who also have goalkeeper Theophilus Afelokhai to thank for making a number of vital saves in the game, but could not make their efforts count.
Heartland’s Omoniwari had the ball at the back of the net in the 52nd minute but his effort was ruled out for offside. Enyimba’s substitute striker Chinonso Okonkwo struck the woodwork late on in the game as the visitors sought for a breakthrough.
Enyimba have now garnered 38 points, five adrift of league leaders Lobi Stars who have 43 points.
Heartland remain in the last position in the table and look set for a return to the Nigeria National League at the end of the season.
Meanwhuile, NPFL clubs are currently on a break for the World Cup in Russia.
