As reported by Goal, Arsenal still have a chance of signing Riyad Mahrez this summer despite Italian giants Roma closing in on a deal for the Leicester City player.
What’s the story?
Riyad Mahrez has contributed much to Leicester City since joining in 2013. He’s gone from a Championship calibre player to one that can perform to a high standard in the UEFA Champions League and was a key part of their title-winning campaign two seasons ago. It seems though that his time at the Foxes is drawing to a close.
Goal report that Roma have agreed personal terms with the winger. However, that’s far from a done deal with Mahrez not committing to the Italian club until he knows that Arsenal aren’t interested in taking him to the Emirates, according to the outlet. They say he’s waiting for Arsene Wenger to come in with an offer.
Should the Gunners go for him?
Rated at £25.5m by Transfermarkt, 26-year-old Mahrez didn’t have an especially successful English Premier League season last term, struggling to follow up the title winning exploits of the season before.
However, it was his form in the UEFA Champions League that perhaps demonstrated best what he could offer Arsenal if he made the switch to London. He scored four goals and provided two assists in nine appearances in the competition, the driving force behind their run to the quarter-finals, which is further of course than the Gunners themselves went in the competition.
Adding his kind of flair and firepower to the first team at the Emirates could be excellent, especially if he finds the form that made Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester such a joy to watch.
