Jose Enrique: Arsenal tried to sign me from Liverpool twice

The 31-year-old Spaniard revealed on Twitter that this happened while he was at both Newcastle, for whom he played between 2007 and 2011, and Liverpool, where he spent five years after joining from the Magpies in 2011.

Enrique was replying to a sports journalist who congratulated Enrique on his career following his retirement, before asking whether the Gunners ever approached him while he was at Newcastle.

Enrique replied: “Thanks a lot for your message. Yes they did mate the same summer I went to liverpool and when I play for liverpool too. Twice they did.”

Jose Enrique made the move to Merseyside from the north east in August 2011 for £7m, the same summer Arsenal sold Gael Clichy to Man City. The north London club eventually signed Brazilian Andre Santos as the Frenchman’s replacement.

Enrique ended up spending five seasons at Anfield, seeing his fortunes change as managers came and went. By the end of his stay at the club, he was barely featuring and was limited to just twelve league games in his final three seasons.

In the first season Enrique played for Liverpool, the club toiled to a lowly eighth place, while Arsenal came third. His last game for the club came in the 2014/15 season, a season in which he featured in just four games for Liverpool.

Enrique spent a year in Spain at Real Zaragoza in his Spanish second tier, before calling time on his playing career due to persistent knee injuries.
