It is believed that Leeds have been interested in the striker since January but due to citizenship difficulties, any move has been delayed until the summer transfer window.
Leeds reportedly have first refusal for the player who was born in the capital of Nigeria.
The 25-year-old has scored eight goals in all competitions this season as he looks set to help Carpi to a mid table finish in Serie B.
Mbakogu helped Carpi achieve promotion into Serie A for the first time in their history in 2014/15 as they lifted the Serie B title.
The striker started his career at north Italian side Scorzè Peseggia before moving Padova to continue his development.
Loan spells at Juve Stabia and then Carpi saw Mbakogu establish himself in Italy. He would score a combined 20 goals during these loan spells which earned him a move to Carpi.
Whilst spending time at Carpi, Mbakogu would leave Italian football for the first time to join Russian side FC Krylia Sovetov Samara. He was sent back just seven games later after failing to score for the Russian outfit.
With Pierre Michel-Lasogga set to return to Hamburg after an inconsistent season in the Sky Bet Championship, Leeds will be looking to strengthen up top.
