Oborududu, Adekuoroye set for US Invitational

Nigeria Wrestling Federation  secretary Ahmed Abdullahi says three  wrestlers will represent the country  at the US Invitational Wrestling Championship on May 16.

Abdullahi told the News Agency of Nigeria  on Thursday that the athletes  had been training ahead of the championship.

He listed  the wrestlers as Blessing Oborududu, Odunayo Adekuoroye and Aminat Adeniyi.

NAN reports that Oborodudu won gold  at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games by defeating Canada’s Danielle Lappage in the women’s 68kg event.

She came from behind to defeat her Canadian counterpart on points (4-3) to claim gold.

Adekuoroye also won gold in women’s 57kg at the  Games.

She was victorious  in the event, having defeated Indian Pooja Dhanda in the final.

Adekuoroye defeated her rival 7-5 points to  defend her Glasgow  2014 Commonwealth Games title.

The NWF chief said, “Oborududu, Adekuoroye and Adeniyi will leave Nigeria on May 13 for the  US.

“The championship will hold from May 16 to May 18, and currently, our athletes are in camp and are training day and night.

“Oborodudu and Mercy Genesis are training in Bayelsa, while Adeniyi and Odunayo are  training in Ondo.’’

On Nigerian wrestlers’ performance at  Gold Coast 2018, Abdullahi said their level of preparations  and constant supervision of the athletes helped.

“Our level of preparation stood us out at the Commonwealth Games.

“We always prepare ahead of time and our president, Daniel Igali, being a former champion in wrestling, also ensured constant supervision of the athletes.”
