Newcastle have recently been linked with Gent’s Moses Simon this summer and the 22-year-old is one of Nigeria’s best players heading into the World Cup in Russia.
Newcastle scouts have been watching the left winger who can also play as an upfront or withdrawn striker.
There’s news in Own Goal Nigeria that Newcastle (Rafa Benitez) want the deal done before the World Cup starts on June 14th.
That would be in Newcastle’s best interests, but whether his club Gent will agree to that, we don’t know.
Usually, clubs want to wait until after the World Cup or Euros to give a chance for their player to shine in the tournament and then they can raise the transfer fee.
Think about Moussa Sissoko playing for France two years ago when he looked world-class in Euro 2016, and we got £30M for him from Spurs on August 31st two years ago.
Liverpool are also reported to be very interested in the player who is priced at around £13M.
Simon could be attracted to the Reds, but he will have a hard time getting a lot of games at Liverpool with the talent Liverpool have, but they do on the other hand offer European Football.
At the moment Newcastle do not.
This could be a good test of owner Mike Ashley and Managing Director Lee Charnley to get this player signed quickly.
And Rafa will be keen to see if Ashley has changed his ways and is at willing to do transfers a lot more quickly than in previous windows.
As we said, this will be a good test of Mike Ashley (very) early this summer.
