Russia 2018: Nigeria ready to impress the world

With less than 70 days before the greatest football showpiece kicks-off, we are already hyped and can’t wait to see what this year’s World Cup has in store for us.

Along with 31 other countries, the Super Eagles of Nigeria will be fighting to lift the prestigious trophy and Nairabet Promotion Code could help you to profit from the tournament.

How they qualified

Nigeria was the first side from Africa to reach Russia, Nigeria continues their impressive run of appearances at the finals, having missed only one tournament – Germany 2006 – since qualifying for their debut in 1994. The Super Eagles battled Zambia, Cameroon and Algeria to finished top of Group B in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers with 14 points from 6 games.

The three-time African Champions started their qualification journey against Zambia winning the game 2-1 at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Zambia before going on to beat Algeria 3-1 in Uyo. Nigeria continued their winning streak against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, trashing them 4-0 and went on to play a 1-1 draw in the return leg at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Cameroon.

A strike from Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi booked the Super Eagles’ spot at the Russia 2018 World Cup as they won the penultimate group game against Zambia 1-0. They played a 1-1 draw against Algeria in the final group game, however, as a penalty for fielding ineligible players Nigeria was handed a 3-0 walk-over defeat.

Who are they facing

Nigeria was drawn in Group D along with former World Champions, Argentina, Croatia and Iceland.

This is not the first time Nigeria will be facing Argentina in the World Cup group stage. The two countries were in Group F at Brazil 2014 World Cup. Argentina beat Nigeria 3-2 in an exciting game that saw Ahmed Musa and Lionel Messi score braces, however, Marcos Rojo’s 50th-minute goal ensured The Albiceleste got all three points. Argentina qualified in first place while Nigeria came second.

The Rohr led team will also have a difficult time dealing with Croatia and Iceland considering both countries performance in recent times.

What we can expect

Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr has been making some major changes to the team and has been able to achieve some result. The big problem, however, remains who’s going to man the post for the team. With the first choice, Carl Ikeme battling with cancer, fans had hoped retired goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama would be returning to the team but for now, that seems not be happening.
