Tosin Kehinde claims the desire to play for Nigeria was always there despite England interest

Manchester United youngster Tosin Kehinde has claimed he always had a desire to play for Nigeria despite it looking touch and go as to which nation he would play for.

The midfielder is also eligible to play for England but is another of the country’s young stars to opt against playing for the senior team.

Crystal Palace’s Wilfred Zaha decided to play for Ivory Coast as he insisted he had a better future there than with the Three Lions.

United’s own Scott McTominay also recently won his first cap for Scotland after there was much debate about which national team he would pick.

Kehinde though has insisted that it was never a debate for him personally and the decision to feature for the African nation was an easy one to make.

According to All Africa, Tosin said to the BBC: “Nigeria has always been a part of me. I was born there. My whole family are Nigerian. I come from a very strong Nigerian background so the influence has always been around me.

“When you are growing up, when you see players like Jay Jay Okocha, how good he was and the current crop of players such as Alex Iwobi and Super Eagles captain, Mikel, the desire to get the opportunity to play for Nigeria has always been there really.”

Nigeria have long been one of the continent’s top nations in terms of football but it’s a little fair to say they’ve underperformed of late.

Expected to consistently challenged for the African Cup of Nations as well as a spot in the World Cup, the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the former’s past two editions.

However, things have been on the up for Nigeria lately as they were the first African team to qualify for the tournament in Russia.

Tosin Kehinde has been touted to possibly even travel with the international squad despite having failed to consistently feature for Manchester United’s first team.

Either way, it would certainly be considered a milestone in his career and something that his club will pride themselves on.
