Former Super Eagles striker Obafemi Martins says coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Gernot Rohr should rely more on the young players in his team when the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations gets underway in Egypt.
Rohr listed a 25 man provisional list for the tournament with young players like Samuel Chukwueze, Samuel Kalu, Victor Osimhen and Wilfred Ndidi making the squad alongside veterans like captain John Obi Mikel, Leon Balogun, Ahmed Musa and Odion Ighalo.
Martins believe the key to the success of the Nigerian team is with the young group of players because they are eager to prove a point unlike the old boys who have already made their mark in the senior national team of Nigeria.
He went forward by saying Rohr should trust in the young players to deliver the team even though the senior players will guide them on and off the pitch during the tournament.
“I will urge him to rely on the boys. They are very energetic and are willing to make name. The old boys have done so well by writing their name in gold in previous AFCON tournament. I will be glad to see the coach bank on new players while the experienced ones put them through on the field of play”, Martins said in Lagos.
