Jonny Williams is delighted to have got through a pre-season without injury and is now feeling fresh ahead of a new season.
The Crystal Palace academy graduate featured in Tuesday’s match at Merstham and wasn’t afraid to put his foot in for a tackle in the middle of the park.
Last summer, Williams was on the end of a crude challenge in a pre-season game at Farnborough and was ruled out for a number of a weeks and months.
So, naturally, there were fears the same may have happened again when playing non-league opposition.
“It’s always tough for me mentally coming into these games, because I’ve played in a couple of them and been on the end of late or mis-timed tackles,” Williams told the Advertiser.
“Maybe not deliberately but just mis-timed at the end of the day. It does come into my mind a bit but I have come through these games and I have also been a bit wiser in my game play.
“I’ve had Damien Delaney and the coaching staff telling me to be careful. It’s important I keep fit this this season and I can help myself at times, take a few less touches, time my runs and when I run with the ball and getting out of the way from challenges.
“I think I have done that well this pre-season and I am looking forward to the new season now.”
