Stuart Manley leading the way
A former footballer is leading the way in the first round of the Open.
Stuart Manley is the early frontrunner at Royal Birkdale after carding a two-under par 68 at Royal Birkdale.
Manley, 38, began his sporting career as a footballer and had trials with Crystal Palace, as well as Manchester United and Luton Town.
But at the age of 16 the Welshman decided to focus on a golf career, and while it has not been particularly plain sailing for him since then, he is certainly stepping up to the plate at Royal Birkdale in the only Major event in this country.
Manley is the clubhouse leader, with more famous names of Ian Poulter, Jordan Spieth and Justin Rose all out on the course at two-under as well.
