The inclusion of Kelechi Iheanacho in the 25 man provisional list of the Super Eagles of Nigeria for the Africa Cup of Nations raised a lot of eyebrows in the Nigerian football circle.
Iheanacho was once upon a time the poster boy of the senior national team of Nigeria but his club form has dwindled drastically since his move from Manchester City to Leicester two seasons ago.
This season he has struggled the most with just a goal in 30 league games this season but mostly as a late substitute which explains the reason why he played a meagre total of 926 minutes of league football this season.
His struggles made the coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Gernot Rohr to drop him from his squad for the last round of international games with the coach openly questioning his professionalism both at club and national team level.
Rohr however included him in his provisional squad for the Cup of Nations, a move which one of the assistants of the coach explained is so done to give him a chance to get his confidence back after a torrid season.
” We can’t act like we don’t know about his struggles at Leicester City but he deserve a chance with the national team. He is still among the top scorers in the team and he is a popular member of the dressing room. Hopefully he will get back to his best soonest “, he told Sports&study.org.
