Pogba will miss Everton’s trip to Manchester United with a hamstring injury
Jose Mourinho confirmed Eric Bailly and Phil Jones will play at the heart of the Manchester United defence against Everton on Sunday – but he admits Paul Pogba is now a major doubt.
The French midfielder, 24, was wearing the captain’s armband for the visit of Basel on Tuesday night, but managed only 18 minutes before limping off with a hamstring injury. He was replaced by former Blue Marouane Fellaini, who scored the opening goal in a routine 3-0 win.
“I just know from experience it’s a muscular injury,” Mourinho said. “In my experience, muscular injury stops you from playing for a few weeks, I think.”
But the former Chelsea boss didn’t seem to be fazed by his record signing’s possible absence on Sunday.
“Squads are for this, squads are for suspensions. We don’t cry with injuries,” he said. “So if no Paul for Sunday, we have Herrera, we have Carrick, we have Fellaini and we have Matic.”
Mourinho, however, was more assertive when asked about his defensive pairing for the visit of the Toffees. Both Bailly and Jones were suspended for the Champions League opener, but were tipped for an immediate return.
He added: “If you want to anticipate the next weekend I probably play Bailly and Jones because today they didn’t play, because they are fresh, because it makes sense for them to play again.”
