Man Utd legend Edwin van der Sar reveals he turned down Liverpool

Legendary former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar has revealed that he turned down the opportunity to join Liverpool in 1999.

After deciding to leave Ajax, van der Sar was on the lookout for a new club and came close to making the switch to Liverpool, having met the club’s manager Gerard Houllier and visited Anfield.

However, the Dutchman eventually elected to sign for Juventus instead.

Van Der Sar told Four Four Two: “When I left Ajax in 1999, I travelled to Liverpool and spoke to (Gerard) Houllier.

“I was shown around Anfield and also met with the chairman and a couple of the players. I thought about it, but when Juventus came to the table I came to the conclusion that it would be a bigger challenge to play in Italy.”

Van der Sar also disclosed that United were considering signing him in 1999 only for Sir Alex Ferguson to bring in Mark Bosnich instead.

He said: “I found out that Ferguson had always been really keen on signing me. But the chairman of United had a deal to sign Mark Bosnich on a free instead.”

Edwin Van Der Sar spent six seasons at Manchester United.

After a stint with Fulham, van der Sar finally signed for United in 2005 and went on to enjoy a hugely successful spell at the club.

He said: “So the idea had always been for me to succeed Peter Schmeichel, but it ended up taking six years longer than planned and they tried out some other keepers in that period.

“I found out that United were going to sign me when I discovered a voicemail from Ferguson. That was a special day. That was the moment I thought: ‘This is why I came over to London – to eventually make this next step forward.’

“Ferguson told me he needed someone who could lead and give guidance to the defence. He said he knew I wouldn’t get flustered if the side was under pressure.”

In total van der Sar play ed 266 times for United and made some spectacular saves, while he won an array of trophies including the Champions League, four Premier League titles, two League Cups and the World Club Cup.

Van Der Sar retired from playing after leaving United in 2011 but he briefly returned to action to make an appearance for his former youth club VV Noordwijk last year, saving a penalty in a game against Jodan Boys.
