Atletico Madrid defender Javier Manquillo is on the verge of joining Newcastle United this summer, according to Mundo Deportivo
The Spanish newspaper claims that the 23-year-old full-back will sign a three-year contract at St James’ Park and it is reported that he could travel to England “in the coming hours” to undergo a medical as Newcastle look to complete a deal imminently.
The Magpies appear to be stepping up their transfer activity this summer as Daily Telegraph reporter John Percy recently posted on his personal Twitter account that Newcastle have agreed a fee with Norwich City to sign winger Jacob Murphy.
The report claims that the defender is determined to leave the Spanish capital in order to enjoy more regular first-team action next season and it is said that Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez was influential in his decision to secure a permanent move to Tyneside.
It is reported that Benitez believes that the defender’s versatility can be a huge asset to the newly-promoted Premier League side next season, with the Spaniard capable of comfortably slotting in the full-back position and also play in the midfield.
Manquillo has already experienced Premier League football during his short footballing career, enjoying spells with Liverpool and Sunderland over the last couple of seasons.
The defender has also demonstrated that he can perform on the international stage, making a total of seven appearances with the Under-21 Spain national team.
