Abdoulaye Doucoure reckons ‘nobody knows’ him despite his strong performances at the heart of Watford’s midfield.
That is something the Frenchman wants to change, though, as he states his intention to be recognised as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.
Doucoure’s rise since finally being given an opportunity by Walter Mazzarri last season is not quite meteoric, but it is certainly impressive and if continues on that upward spiral it will not be long before more people outside of Vicarage Road are talking about him.
His desire to be a leader and continue improving will certainly hold him in good stead.
“[I’m] happy to play and every time I’m on the pitch I enjoy it,” Doucoure said. “I still have to improve a lot.
“It’s good, I take my chances and I want to carry on like this and improve again.
“I’m happy and I’ve worked for that [chance to play regularly]. I want to be, and I said before the season, I want to be one of the best midfielders in the league.
“In the team I want to be a leader and after Southampton I’m happy and [we] have plenty to work on. We’ll see at the end of the season where I am.”
How far away does Doucoure think he is from being talked about as one of the best in the Premier League?
“I think I have to improve. In the Premier League nobody knows me, I have to work and be one of the best. I have to show more performances like Southampton,” he added.
“I just want to work and to win the games – which is important for the team. After the individual players can come out.”
And he picked out a fellow Frenchman as one of the midfielders he looks up to, adding: “N’Golo Kante is one of the best. He was the best midfielder in the Premier League last year. But there a lot of midfielders. I want to show my abilities.”
