Marko Arnautovic’s parting gift to Stoke City earlier this summer was to help bequeath them Tottenham defender Kevin Wimmer.
The 24 year-old Austrian, who has joined the club for a near club record £18m, said his compatriot helped sell Stoke to him before he left for West Ham.
And that news may help restore some of Arnautovic’s popularity with Stoke fans after upsetting them when he said he was leaving for a bigger and more ambitious club.
Wimmer, who joins a strong stable of centre backs at Stoke City, revealed: “I am very happy to be here at such a nice club with a big tradition and I can’t wait to meet everyone and get started. I hope it will be a very good time for me.
“I had some good conversations with the manager Mark Hughes and I think he’s a very good manager. His idea of football is also what I want. He likes to play from the back and I think that fits me very well.
“I really wanted to come here because I know some guys from last year. I spoke to Marko Arnautovic and he told me some very positive things.
“I am delighted to be here and can’t wait to get started and am really looking forward to train with the boys.
“I think we have a very good team, a very good manager and can do very well this year.”
Wimmer acknowledged he hadn’t played much at Spurs – 15 Premier League appearances in two years – but insists he is ready to become a Stoke regular given the chance.
“I have some experience in the Premier League, but not that regular,” said Wimmer. “But still it was Premier League football and so I know what it’s all about, but I want to play more regular to show what I can do.
“I can’t wait to show my skills and do my best for this club, for the supporters, to improve myself and make everyone happy.
“For a centre back, I am quite good with the ball. I can play good passes from the back to the top, also long balls diagonal to the wingers. This is what I can do good and hope to show this and help the team.
“But there is still a lot to improve on and I will do my best every training session to get better and better.”
