Newly invited Super Eagles forward Paul Onuachu says he thought he won’t get the chance to play for Nigeria anytime soon, hence his invitation to the team came as a surprise.
Onuachu made the squad for the upcoming games against Seychelles and Egypt respectively and despite his enviable record as Nigeria’s top scoring forward in Europe this season, the FC Midtjylland forward said he wasn’t expecting to be called up.
” My first contact with the technical crew of the Super Eagles came 18 months ago. I was hopeful a call up will follow but it didn’t happen. So I took my mind off the national team believing God that will come at his appointed time”, Onuachu told Sports&study.org.
” The day I was informed by my club that I’ve been called up, I initially thought it was a joke. When I saw the letter I was pleasantly surprised because I thought they’ve forgotten about me. I’m here now and I hope to give my all if I get to play”, he remarked.
This season he has scored 17 goals from 31 games in all competitions with 14 goals coming in the league where he also has five assists from 23 games. A form that makes him Nigeria’s highest scoring forward in Europe.
Already coach of the Super Eagles Gernot Rohr has revealed he will get a chance to play in the games against Seychelles and Egypt and hopefully push for a spot in the squad for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
