The Irish Xavi’ Aston Villa fans react to Glenn Whelan’s arrival

Steve Bruce’s Aston Villa today made their 4th signing of the summer window in the form of experienced Irish defensive midfielder Glenn Whelan.

Whelan has arrived from Stoke City for a fee that will rise to over £1 million.

Bruce will be hoping that, along with new club captain John Terry, Whelan should be able to provide key experience in the upcoming promotion battle having been promoted himself with Stoke in 2007-08.

Whelan has signed a two-year contract that will tie him to Villa until the summer of 2019.

Villa fans took to social media to have their say on the signing. Here’s a selection of their comments.

Thomas Williams: Things are looking great for us, defence sorted now midfield looking great upfront. What more can I say?”

Stίofάn O’Thuathail: Solid midfielder. One creative midfielder now and we will have a steady squad that might not take the championship by storm but should grind out enough results for a successful season.

Vijay Daryanani: We’ve been missing a hard nut in midfield – perfect short term signing till we are back in the Premier League next season!

Daniel Claude Pierre: I’m usually really positive with new signings but I don’t see how this player makes the team and surely Veretout is a much better player.

Pete Fenny: Buying for buying’s sake again. When will Villa and Bruce ever learn.

Chris Dolan: Great signing. Proper box to box midfield player. Will also have a big influence on Connor Hourihane.

Richie: We must have the biggest squad in the country! Worrying wage bill?! We need to ship some out surely before we break again.

Vital Villa: Tough tackling, dedicated, experienced and the right attitude. Hopefully his influence will rub off on some of the passengers in the squad.

Aido: The Irish Xavi.

Tony Lloyd: Shrewd signing in my opinion. Get rid of dead wood now (including a forward) and replace with another decent forward and I’m happy.
