Vizag firm inks licence pact with national lab for tech to recycle plastic waste into tiles

As states grapple with the environmental problem of getting rid of plastic, the New Delhi-based CSIR-NPL has one small solution for recycling the waste into useful tiles. The national lab has developed a technology which is eco-friendly and patented. It has signed a licence agreement to provide the technology to the Visakhapatnam-based Vyzag Bio-energy Fuel to manufacture the products on a commercial scale.

The Vizag company is planning to set up a recycling unit for converting waste plastic into useful products like tiles. “We bought the licence from NRDC for technical knowhow. We are also requesting the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) for land on lease to set up the plant with an investment of Rs 3.2 crore and a capacity of 5 lakh tiles per month and hope to commission it in six months,” said Kotamraju Sanyasi Raju.

The Vizag company signed an agreement with the NRDC Chairman & Managing Director, H Purushotham, and the NPL Director DK Aswal recently. A retired senior executive from Tata Steel, Raju is Director in the company started by his wife Kotamraju Chiranjeevi and daughter Lakshmi Bhavana.

The company has already signed an MoU with GVMC to set up a biogas plant with an initial capacity of 20 tonnes of organic wet waste as feed. The products generated from the plant are expected to yield 500 kilos of bio-CNG, which will be bottled, besides four tonnes of organic manure.

The present initiative is a diversification into plastic waste recycling. The NPL knowhow will help fabricate tiles of 3 mm to 60 mm thickness. In addition, tailor-made designs can be made based on the customer’s needs. The product has been tested for flammability, water absorption and mechanical strength in line with the American Society for Testing Materials standards.

The technology developed by SK Dhawan and team under the leadership of DK Aswal, Director, offers an uncomplicated and novel process for tackling the problem of plastic waste, while recycling it to produce a commercially viable product.
